Photoshop Tutorial: Exploding Text Effect

  • 00:00:10 Lets get started. All stock download links are in the description.
  • 00:00:14 Lets start off by heading up to File – New.
  • 00:00:19 Width: 1900 Pixels by Height 1280 Pixels.
  • 00:00:25 Change the background contents: Black.
  • 00:00:31 Then hit ok.
  • 00:00:34 Ok again.
  • 00:00:37 Select the Type Tool. (T)
  • 00:00:41 I'll use a stock font. Calibri Bold.
  • 00:00:45 Font size: 83pt.
  • 00:00:48 I'm going to type EXPLODE.
  • 00:00:55 Select your Move Tool. (V)
  • 00:00:59 Position the text in the center.
  • 00:01:04 Head down and select Mask.
  • 00:01:12 Make sure your foreground color is set to black.
  • 00:01:15 Select the Brush Tool. (B)
  • 00:01:19 I'm going to select a brush for blending some of the text.
  • 00:01:24 Download link for brushes are in the description.
  • 00:01:28 I want to blend/fade some of the text, like so.
  • 00:01:39 I'm going to head up to the brush picker and rotate the brush for the bottom of the text.
  • 00:01:44 Start fading the bottom like so.
  • 00:01:53 Once you're done. Select a different exposion brush.
  • 00:02:06 Start adding the effect like so.
  • 00:02:11 Be sure to use different size brushes.
  • 00:02:23 Create a new layer, Rename it to effect.
  • 00:02:31 Change our foreground color to white.
  • 00:02:36 Zoom in using your Zoom Tool. (Z)
  • 00:02:40 Now, lets start adding the effect.
  • 00:02:43 Select the Brush Tool. (B)
  • 00:02:45 Select one of the explosion brushes.
  • 00:02:48 Increase Brush Size: ] Decreae Brush Size: [
  • 00:02:53 Take your time on this part!
  • 00:02:57 Increase Brush Size: ] Decreae Brush Size: [
  • 00:03:03 Use different brushes, so it does not look like a pattern.
  • 00:03:14 This part I will speed up to save you some time!
  • 00:03:33 CTRL + 0 to zoom back out.
  • 00:03:37 That's starting to look good!
  • 00:03:40 Lets select another brush, this time make sure it's much larger.
  • 00:03:48 I'm going to add larger particles.
  • 00:03:50 Rotate the brush if needed.
  • 00:04:10 Next thing I'm going to do, is add a cracked texture.
  • 00:04:15 Using your Move Tool. Drag and drop onto our main project.
  • 00:04:22 Make sure it's below the "Effect" layer.
  • 00:04:27 CTRL + T to select the texture.
  • 00:04:30 Resize the texture as needed.
  • 00:04:34 Hit enter when you're done.
  • 00:04:38 ALT + Click between the two layer to create a clipping mask.

  • 00:04:46 Use your Move Tool if you need to adjust the texture position.
  • 00:04:55 Lets duplicate the texture, CTRL + J. Or drag the texture onto create a new layer.
  • 00:05:02 Move the new texture above the "Effect" layer.
  • 00:05:05 CTRL + T to select the texture. Increase the size.
  • 00:05:10 The size should be as big as the explosion.
  • 00:05:14 When you're done. Hit Enter.
  • 00:05:16 ALT + click between the two layers to create a clipping mask.
  • 00:05:20 As you can see, it makes a great difference.
  • 00:05:25 You can also move the texture, by selecting the Move Tool.
  • 00:05:30 I'm going to add a stardust image I created.
  • 00:05:37 Using your Move Tool. Drag and drop onto our main project.
  • 00:05:42 Position the stardust image in the center.
  • 00:05:45 CTRL + T to select the image.
  • 00:05:48 ALT + SHIFT while dragging the corners outwards. Enter when done.
  • 00:05:51 Right click on the stardust image. Convert to a Smart Object.
  • 00:05:58 I'm going to rename this layer to Space/Dust.
  • 00:06:03 I'm going to change the Blending Mode to Screen.
  • 00:06:07 Head up to Filter – Blur – Radial Blur.
  • 00:06:13 Blur Method: Zoom
  • 00:06:17 Quality: Best
  • 00:06:19 I'm going to blur it about 7.
  • 00:06:20 Then lets hit ok.
  • 00:06:23 Bring down the opacity level to about -62
  • 00:06:28 I'm going to select the top texture.
  • 00:06:33 Create a new adjustment layer. Select Gradient Map.
  • 00:06:37 Click on the Gradient Presets.
  • 00:06:41 Select a nice gradient.
  • 00:06:49 I'm going to select a purple to blue. First Color code: 6367f9
  • 00:06:56 Hit ok when done.
  • 00:07:01 Blue Color Code: 14e1de
  • 00:07:04 Hit ok when done.
  • 00:07:06 Ok again.
  • 00:07:07 Change the Blending Mode to Soft Light.
  • 00:07:11 Bring the opacity to about 40%.
  • 00:07:20 I'm going to add one more dust image.
  • 00:07:23 Using your Move Tool. Drag and drop onto our main project.
  • 00:07:27 Position it however you'd like.
  • 00:07:31 That's it!
