- 00:00:01 welcome to this video on the channel you
- 00:00:03 can find some videos about power bi
- 00:00:05 already
- 00:00:06 feel free to have a look at these if you
- 00:00:07 want to but if you really want to dive
- 00:00:09 deeper into the tool and get kind of a
- 00:00:11 well more comprehensive introduction
- 00:00:14 then i also got a 10 hours udemy course
- 00:00:16 about power bi
- 00:00:17 it's called power bi a complete
- 00:00:19 introduction well and in this video
- 00:00:21 i want to give you a course excerpt this
- 00:00:24 means you get the first hour or i think
- 00:00:25 the first 15 minutes to be more precise
- 00:00:28 of this course to get an idea of power
- 00:00:30 bi about the content of the course
- 00:00:32 and about what you're going to learn in
- 00:00:33 there you can also find a link to the
- 00:00:35 course down there in the
- 00:00:36 description but for now have fun with
- 00:00:39 the excerpt and especially
- 00:00:40 have fun with power bi
- 00:00:47 let's start with the answer to the most
- 00:00:50 important question first
- 00:00:51 what is power bi actually if you look at
- 00:00:54 the home page
- 00:00:55 you can find the following text so power
- 00:00:58 bi is a suit of business analytics tools
- 00:01:01 it allows you to work on data to create
- 00:01:03 reports
- 00:01:04 to publish that reports and a lot more
- 00:01:07 this sounds really great but we have to
- 00:01:10 take a closer look at that
- 00:01:12 to really understand how this works
- 00:01:15 so we already know that power bi is not
- 00:01:18 a single tool
- 00:01:19 but consists of multiple tools
- 00:01:21 additionally
- 00:01:22 we have that building blocks let's see
- 00:01:24 what that is
- 00:01:26 the first tool is power bi desktop the
- 00:01:29 local application
- 00:01:30 only available on windows in power bi
- 00:01:33 desktop
- 00:01:34 we have the first building block the
- 00:01:36 data sets
- 00:01:38 now what is a data set a data set
- 00:01:41 simply describes the data or the
- 00:01:43 information
- 00:01:44 that you have in your data model you can
- 00:01:47 either connect power bi desktop to
- 00:01:49 pre-defined data sets
- 00:01:51 so you simply import the data into the
- 00:01:53 data model
- 00:01:54 and then you're done or you can create
- 00:01:56 your own data sets
- 00:01:58 this would mean that you connect power
- 00:02:00 via desktop to different source files
- 00:02:02 in so called queries we will talk about
- 00:02:04 that throughout the course
- 00:02:06 and then work on those queries as soon
- 00:02:09 as you finished your work
- 00:02:10 you will then load that newly created
- 00:02:12 structure into the data model
- 00:02:15 and by that have your own data set
- 00:02:18 now in both cases you are not done right
- 00:02:20 here because you want to
- 00:02:22 visualize your data right to do this you
- 00:02:25 need the second building block
- 00:02:26 the visualizations a visualization is
- 00:02:29 simply
- 00:02:30 a chart or a table so everything that
- 00:02:33 well
- 00:02:33 visualizes your data with the
- 00:02:36 visualizations we have the third
- 00:02:38 building block
- 00:02:39 the tiles tiles are simply the area
- 00:02:43 of your visualizations so kind of the
- 00:02:45 frame around it
- 00:02:46 you can change the height or the width
- 00:02:48 and the position of the tiles
- 00:02:50 just as you prefer the only limitation
- 00:02:53 is the space on your report page
- 00:02:56 reports yes we also have reports in
- 00:03:00 power via desktop
- 00:03:02 and reports are the fourth building
- 00:03:03 block
- 00:03:05 you can simply create multiple pages
- 00:03:07 with different visualizations
- 00:03:09 just as you prefer well and the summary
- 00:03:12 or the combination of the pages
- 00:03:14 this is the report so this is power bi
- 00:03:17 desktop
- 00:03:18 you can create data sets and visualize
- 00:03:21 the data
- 00:03:22 in visualizations and the combination of
- 00:03:25 multiple visualizations on multiple
- 00:03:27 pages
- 00:03:28 this is the report then now the second
- 00:03:31 tool is power bi service
- 00:03:33 this is a cloud application and by that
- 00:03:36 not limited to windows only
- 00:03:38 which allows you to share your results
- 00:03:41 and to collaborate in your projects with
- 00:03:43 your colleagues
- 00:03:44 but if we look at the different building
- 00:03:46 blocks we can see
- 00:03:48 that those are equal to the ones that we
- 00:03:50 just saw in power bi desktop
- 00:03:52 now what's the difference power bi
- 00:03:55 service can of course be connected
- 00:03:57 to different data sets but the creation
- 00:04:00 of that own data sets we just talked
- 00:04:02 about in power bi desktop
- 00:04:04 so the connection to different source
- 00:04:05 files then the work on those
- 00:04:07 queries and by that the creation of that
- 00:04:09 new structure
- 00:04:10 that you then load into your data model
- 00:04:13 this is not possible in power bi service
- 00:04:15 so power bi service is the tool to
- 00:04:18 connect to existing data sets
- 00:04:20 power bi desktop is the tool to create
- 00:04:22 new data sets in
- 00:04:24 that's an important difference however
- 00:04:27 as we can connect power bi service to
- 00:04:29 those existing data sets
- 00:04:30 and also that created data sets in power
- 00:04:33 bi desktop of course
- 00:04:34 we can also create visualizations and
- 00:04:37 reports
- 00:04:38 but the functionality of the creation of
- 00:04:40 the visualizations and of the reports
- 00:04:42 well we know that from power via desktop
- 00:04:45 already right
- 00:04:46 so we will not create visualizations and
- 00:04:48 reports in power bi service
- 00:04:50 in that course we will learn how this
- 00:04:53 works in power bi desktop
- 00:04:54 and the functionality and the interface
- 00:04:56 as i said
- 00:04:57 when it comes to the creation of that
- 00:04:59 visualizations is the same between those
- 00:05:01 two tools
- 00:05:02 now what else can we do in power bi
- 00:05:04 service then well
- 00:05:06 we talked about the sharing and
- 00:05:07 collaborating and we will learn how this
- 00:05:09 works
- 00:05:10 but there is one additional building
- 00:05:12 block that is only available
- 00:05:14 in power bi service and those are the
- 00:05:16 dashboards
- 00:05:18 now what is a dashboard well when we
- 00:05:20 talk about a dashboard
- 00:05:21 simply think about a cover page so one
- 00:05:24 single page
- 00:05:25 which summarizes the key facts of your
- 00:05:28 report
- 00:05:29 this is the dashboard so this first page
- 00:05:30 you see if you want to dive deeper
- 00:05:33 then you can jump into the report and
- 00:05:35 get more information
- 00:05:36 about your data so this is the second
- 00:05:39 tool this
- 00:05:40 sharing collaborating tool with the
- 00:05:42 creation of the dashboards
- 00:05:44 let's quickly summarize what we learned
- 00:05:46 so far
- 00:05:48 we have power bi desktop the local
- 00:05:50 application
- 00:05:51 where we can create our data sets our
- 00:05:53 visualizations
- 00:05:54 and our reports we then publish that
- 00:05:58 information
- 00:05:58 to power bi service the cloud solution
- 00:06:02 in there we can also collaborate with
- 00:06:04 colleagues for example if we want
- 00:06:06 or add dashboards to our existing data
- 00:06:09 so we have the data in the cloud now if
- 00:06:12 we now use the third tool
- 00:06:14 power bi mobile a mobile app as the name
- 00:06:17 says
- 00:06:18 this will allow us to access the data
- 00:06:20 that we loaded to power bi service
- 00:06:23 from our mobile devices and we will also
- 00:06:26 take a look at power bi mobile of course
- 00:06:28 and see how this app works and what we
- 00:06:30 can do with it
- 00:06:32 so those are the three core tools of
- 00:06:34 power bi
- 00:06:35 that we need and that we will talk about
- 00:06:38 in detail
- 00:06:39 throughout that course but we will show
- 00:06:41 you more
- 00:06:42 we will show you power bi for developers
- 00:06:45 also
- 00:06:46 power bi for developers is made to
- 00:06:48 customize your power bi experience
- 00:06:50 this means you can create your own
- 00:06:52 customized visuals
- 00:06:54 and you will see how this works
- 00:06:55 throughout the course and you can also
- 00:06:57 embed
- 00:06:58 your power bi results into your own
- 00:07:00 existing apps with power bi embedded
- 00:07:03 something that is rather related to your
- 00:07:06 own app
- 00:07:06 and not directly connected to power bi
- 00:07:10 because of that we will not cover this
- 00:07:12 topic as part of this course
- 00:07:14 however with that power bi for
- 00:07:16 developers block we now have an overview
- 00:07:19 of the entire power bi universe that we
- 00:07:22 will talk about
- 00:07:22 throughout that course and now i think
- 00:07:25 it's time
- 00:07:25 that we start with our first little
- 00:07:28 project right
- 00:07:30 let's do this and let's start with the
- 00:07:32 first tool power bi desktop the local
- 00:07:34 application
- 00:07:35 well and to work with this local
- 00:07:37 application we first have to download
- 00:07:40 and install it let's do this in the next
- 00:07:43 video
- 00:07:49 we want to create our first little
- 00:07:51 project in power bi desktop
- 00:07:53 let's now download it and connect it to
- 00:07:56 the first data
- 00:07:58 so this is the home page of power bi
- 00:08:01 that we saw in the last video
- 00:08:03 if we now go to products up here and
- 00:08:06 select power via desktop
- 00:08:08 then we have two options download and
- 00:08:11 advanced download options
- 00:08:13 if you press download then the download
- 00:08:15 will immediately start
- 00:08:16 and then you can install power bi
- 00:08:18 desktop but you couldn't choose your
- 00:08:20 language
- 00:08:21 and you can't change the language after
- 00:08:23 you installed power bi desktop
- 00:08:25 so i would press advanced download
- 00:08:26 options right here
- 00:08:29 if you then scroll down then you can
- 00:08:31 select the language you want to install
- 00:08:33 power bi desktop in
- 00:08:34 right here i will now select english and
- 00:08:37 press the download button
- 00:08:39 and i hope you do the same and then you
- 00:08:42 can simply follow the installation guide
- 00:08:44 and after that we will see each other
- 00:08:46 when we start power bi desktop together
- 00:08:49 for the first time we install power bi
- 00:08:52 desktop let's open it now
- 00:08:57 and when you open power bi desktop you
- 00:09:00 can see this
- 00:09:01 sign in option this is not necessary at
- 00:09:04 the moment
- 00:09:05 as we will work locally in power bi
- 00:09:07 desktop
- 00:09:08 we will talk about that sign in later
- 00:09:11 when we talk about power bs service
- 00:09:13 the cloud application if you want to
- 00:09:15 sign in to power of your desktop
- 00:09:17 right here you can of course do that the
- 00:09:20 only thing you need to know is that you
- 00:09:22 need a work or a school email address
- 00:09:25 you cannot register with a gmail address
- 00:09:27 for instance
- 00:09:28 however as we don't have to sign in
- 00:09:31 right here we will simply click on to
- 00:09:32 get data now
- 00:09:33 right there and now you can see
- 00:09:37 that you can connect power via desktop
- 00:09:39 to multiple data sources
- 00:09:42 now one quick note before we start in
- 00:09:45 this first initial project
- 00:09:46 so in this and the next two videos i
- 00:09:49 only want to show you
- 00:09:50 how easy to use power bi desktop is and
- 00:09:52 how quickly you can create your first
- 00:09:54 visualizations
- 00:09:56 so in case you don't understand
- 00:09:58 everything i'm doing right here
- 00:10:00 don't worry we will talk about
- 00:10:02 everything you see right here
- 00:10:03 and about more throughout the course so
- 00:10:06 for the moment
- 00:10:07 just follow my guidance and enjoy power
- 00:10:09 bi desktop
- 00:10:11 so back to our get data function so we
- 00:10:13 need data
- 00:10:14 and we don't have any so why don't we
- 00:10:16 just get some data
- 00:10:18 from the web to do this we simply can
- 00:10:21 click
- 00:10:21 onto that search bar right here and type
- 00:10:24 web
- 00:10:25 like this and if we now select the
- 00:10:27 second option
- 00:10:28 right here and press connect
- 00:10:31 at this button then we can see
- 00:10:35 that we have to enter a url right here
- 00:10:38 well as we don't have a url right now
- 00:10:41 we have to look for one let's do this
- 00:10:45 so a good data set for our first initial
- 00:10:47 project
- 00:10:48 would be gdp data for instance for
- 00:10:50 different countries also
- 00:10:52 you can find data like that if you
- 00:10:54 search for the imf
- 00:10:56 world economic outlook database so the
- 00:10:59 second result right here
- 00:11:01 and down here we have the link that we
- 00:11:04 need another note
- 00:11:06 at the time when i recorded that video
- 00:11:08 the april 2017 version was the latest
- 00:11:11 one
- 00:11:12 in case you watched this video later you
- 00:11:14 might have a more recent version
- 00:11:16 this doesn't change the upline steps
- 00:11:18 that we will do right now
- 00:11:19 the only thing that changes of course is
- 00:11:21 the data
- 00:11:23 now let's click onto that april 2017
- 00:11:25 version right now
- 00:11:27 like this now we select by countries
- 00:11:30 up here here we can select
- 00:11:34 all countries here we click continue
- 00:11:38 in the right upper part we said that we
- 00:11:42 want to have gdp data
- 00:11:43 so let's select the ones at current
- 00:11:45 prices in us dollar right here
- 00:11:48 press continue and now one less time
- 00:11:52 then we got it press prepare report
- 00:11:55 right here
- 00:11:56 and now we got a table right there this
- 00:11:59 is good
- 00:12:00 and we could also download that table
- 00:12:02 right here
- 00:12:03 but we don't have to do this because we
- 00:12:05 can now simply select the url
- 00:12:07 right there and copy it into our power
- 00:12:11 bi desktop file
- 00:12:12 let's do this so i now paste the url
- 00:12:15 into this field and press ok
- 00:12:20 now the navigator opened and the
- 00:12:22 navigator
- 00:12:23 allows us to select the information that
- 00:12:25 we want to retrieve
- 00:12:26 from that web page so the information we
- 00:12:28 want to connect probably a desktop to
- 00:12:30 basically
- 00:12:31 in the left part you can select the
- 00:12:33 different parts of that page
- 00:12:35 so if you click onto document right here
- 00:12:37 for instance
- 00:12:39 you see that this is not the table that
- 00:12:41 we want
- 00:12:42 let's maybe change from the table view
- 00:12:44 up here to the web view
- 00:12:46 like this and now you can see that the
- 00:12:49 page
- 00:12:49 is categorized in different tables and
- 00:12:52 we can also see that table null is not
- 00:12:55 the right one but table 1 is the correct
- 00:12:57 table
- 00:12:58 so if we select that by ticking that box
- 00:13:01 right here
- 00:13:02 which is then also ticked in the left
- 00:13:03 part right there
- 00:13:05 and then take a look at the table view
- 00:13:07 again right here
- 00:13:09 then we can see that we selected the
- 00:13:11 correct data
- 00:13:13 well now that we know that we simply
- 00:13:15 have to press
- 00:13:16 well what do we have to press now we
- 00:13:18 have two options we have
- 00:13:20 load and edit again i will not talk
- 00:13:23 about the details right now
- 00:13:25 you will understand the differences
- 00:13:26 between those two options throughout the
- 00:13:28 course
- 00:13:29 so just a quick information for the
- 00:13:30 moment if we press
- 00:13:32 load then we will immediately load the
- 00:13:35 data into the data model
- 00:13:37 if we press edit then we will first open
- 00:13:40 the query editor
- 00:13:42 the query editor is kind of a separate
- 00:13:44 tool in power bi desktop
- 00:13:46 that allows us to prepare the data so
- 00:13:48 for instance to delete rows or delete
- 00:13:50 columns or add columns or a lot more
- 00:13:53 and then load this clean data into the
- 00:13:55 data model
- 00:13:57 as we first want to prepare the data we
- 00:13:59 will click
- 00:14:00 edit right here to open that query
- 00:14:02 editor
- 00:14:03 now let's press that and now you can see
- 00:14:06 the query editor with our initial
- 00:14:08 project data
- 00:14:09 for the first time let's take a look at
- 00:14:12 what we can do right here
- 00:14:19 we now connect the power bi desktop to
- 00:14:21 data
- 00:14:22 time to take a look at that data in the
- 00:14:25 query editor
- 00:14:26 so again this is probably something
- 00:14:29 totally new for you
- 00:14:30 you haven't seen that interface before
- 00:14:32 you don't know what you can do right
- 00:14:33 here
- 00:14:34 and don't worry we will talk about all
- 00:14:36 that throughout the course
- 00:14:38 for the moment let me just show you how
- 00:14:40 quickly you can now clean that data
- 00:14:42 then load the data into the data model
- 00:14:44 and then create beautiful visualizations
- 00:14:47 so we are in this data preparation step
- 00:14:49 right here
- 00:14:50 and what you can see up here in the
- 00:14:52 center where we have our data
- 00:14:54 that the column names up there well
- 00:14:56 those are not really good
- 00:14:58 a better column name would be the second
- 00:15:00 row because this should be the country
- 00:15:02 the subject descriptor should be the
- 00:15:04 second column and so on
- 00:15:06 to do this we have to apply two steps
- 00:15:09 the first step is
- 00:15:10 we have to delete the first row this one
- 00:15:12 right here because we don't need that
- 00:15:14 information in here
- 00:15:16 the second step then is that we have to
- 00:15:18 turn this second row
- 00:15:20 which will then be the first row after
- 00:15:21 deleting that current first row
- 00:15:23 so we want to turn that new first row
- 00:15:26 into the header
- 00:15:26 the column names so let's first delete
- 00:15:29 the first row
- 00:15:31 to do this we simply go to the home
- 00:15:33 ribbon right here
- 00:15:34 and then click onto remove rows right
- 00:15:37 here
- 00:15:38 and select remove top rows like this
- 00:15:42 now we want to remove the top rows
- 00:15:44 starting from the top
- 00:15:45 which of course excludes the column
- 00:15:47 names so we simply type
- 00:15:49 1 to delete the first row and press ok
- 00:15:53 now we see that this first row is gone
- 00:15:56 now we want to turn this new first row
- 00:15:59 into the column name
- 00:16:01 to do this we can stay in the home
- 00:16:02 ribbon and now press
- 00:16:04 on to use first row as headers right
- 00:16:06 here
- 00:16:08 if we do that well then we also got this
- 00:16:11 so those were the first two steps we had
- 00:16:13 to apply and with that
- 00:16:15 we are finished with the work on our
- 00:16:17 rows
- 00:16:18 let's take a look at the columns now so
- 00:16:21 you can simply select a column of course
- 00:16:23 and then navigate with the left and
- 00:16:25 right arrow keys on the keyboard
- 00:16:27 so i think we should keep the country
- 00:16:29 column the subject descriptor
- 00:16:31 the units and the scale those columns
- 00:16:34 are fine
- 00:16:35 but the country and series specific
- 00:16:37 nodes i don't think we need that
- 00:16:39 now if you want to delete that column
- 00:16:41 you simply have to select the column
- 00:16:43 what we did right now then again stay in
- 00:16:45 the home ribbon
- 00:16:47 and then press remove columns right here
- 00:16:49 like this
- 00:16:51 so this column is gone let's now take a
- 00:16:53 look at the remaining columns
- 00:16:55 and see if we have to delete anything
- 00:16:56 else so
- 00:16:58 those year columns are fine we will talk
- 00:17:00 about those in a few seconds
- 00:17:02 though and in the last column yes i
- 00:17:05 think we should also delete this column
- 00:17:07 so again we simply click remove columns
- 00:17:10 and it's gone so i mentioned this
- 00:17:13 year columns a few seconds ago because i
- 00:17:16 think the way we displayed
- 00:17:18 at the moment is not the best way
- 00:17:20 wouldn't it be better
- 00:17:21 if we change that into two columns
- 00:17:24 simply
- 00:17:25 one column being named years with all
- 00:17:28 the corresponding years
- 00:17:29 in the corresponding rows of that column
- 00:17:32 and the second column
- 00:17:33 with the corresponding gdp data i think
- 00:17:36 so
- 00:17:37 and what we have to do right now is we
- 00:17:39 have to turn
- 00:17:40 this columns so this year columns into
- 00:17:43 rows basically
- 00:17:44 so the column is named year and all the
- 00:17:47 rows in that column
- 00:17:48 are the different years to do this we
- 00:17:51 simply select the first column
- 00:17:53 the 2015 column and now press and hold
- 00:17:56 shift on the keyboard
- 00:17:57 and select the last column like this
- 00:18:01 now we change from the home ribbon to
- 00:18:03 the transform ribbon up here
- 00:18:06 and now we press that unpivot columns
- 00:18:08 function
- 00:18:09 again something we will talk about in
- 00:18:11 detail throughout that course
- 00:18:13 but for the moment we simply press that
- 00:18:16 like this
- 00:18:17 and as you can see we simply turned
- 00:18:20 those multiple columns
- 00:18:21 into one single column with the years
- 00:18:25 being single rows in that column this
- 00:18:28 was easy right
- 00:18:29 let's continue because we have to rename
- 00:18:32 that columns now
- 00:18:33 because attribute and value not the best
- 00:18:36 names probably
- 00:18:37 let's change that quickly by double
- 00:18:39 clicking onto the attribute column
- 00:18:41 up here and now name it year
- 00:18:44 like this and press enter and do the
- 00:18:47 same thing
- 00:18:47 for the gdp column well and name it gdp
- 00:18:51 like this now we got that and
- 00:18:54 now we should make sure that we only
- 00:18:56 have rows in that gdp column
- 00:18:58 where we have data for because we only
- 00:19:00 want to import
- 00:19:01 the really important information into
- 00:19:04 our data model
- 00:19:05 so we should take a look at that now to
- 00:19:07 see if we have any nas
- 00:19:09 in this gdp column we simply click onto
- 00:19:11 that arrow right here
- 00:19:13 now scroll down and as you can see we
- 00:19:17 have some nas
- 00:19:18 so if we unselect that and press ok
- 00:19:21 those n a's are no longer in that column
- 00:19:24 and by that
- 00:19:25 won't be loaded into the data model when
- 00:19:27 we finish the work in mercury editor you
- 00:19:29 will see that of course
- 00:19:31 now we got that clean column here
- 00:19:34 so the only thing we have to do is we
- 00:19:36 have to change the
- 00:19:38 format of the data in here why should we
- 00:19:41 change that
- 00:19:42 well if you look at that symbol right
- 00:19:44 here this abc
- 00:19:45 and click it you can see that at the
- 00:19:48 moment this gdp column
- 00:19:50 or the values in the http column are
- 00:19:52 formatted as text
- 00:19:54 and this is not true so we should change
- 00:19:56 this
- 00:19:57 and one way to change this is if we
- 00:19:59 simply change it right here from text
- 00:20:01 to decimal number for instance and as
- 00:20:04 you can see the symbol also changed now
- 00:20:06 from abc
- 00:20:07 to 1 2 to indicate that this is a
- 00:20:09 decimal number now
- 00:20:11 so this was fine but what if you have to
- 00:20:13 select multiple columns or to change the
- 00:20:16 formats of multiple columns actually
- 00:20:18 well then you have another option in
- 00:20:19 power bi you can simply select the first
- 00:20:22 column
- 00:20:22 like this and again select all the
- 00:20:25 remaining columns
- 00:20:27 like that now if you go to the transform
- 00:20:30 ribbon again
- 00:20:31 and press detect data type right here
- 00:20:34 like this
- 00:20:35 then you can see that the format of the
- 00:20:37 first four columns
- 00:20:39 of course didn't change because well
- 00:20:40 those are text so this is fine
- 00:20:42 but the format of the year column
- 00:20:44 changed to a whole number now
- 00:20:46 which is fine for the moment and this is
- 00:20:49 it
- 00:20:50 we now finish the work in our query
- 00:20:52 editor so in this data preparation step
- 00:20:54 for our initial project the next step
- 00:20:57 now is
- 00:20:58 to load that data that clean data into
- 00:21:01 the actual
- 00:21:02 data model and create visualizations
- 00:21:09 we made a great progress in our initial
- 00:21:11 project
- 00:21:13 time to continue we finished the work in
- 00:21:16 that query editor
- 00:21:18 if you want to load the data into the
- 00:21:20 data model now
- 00:21:21 then you simply go to the home ribbon
- 00:21:23 like this
- 00:21:24 and press close and apply right here if
- 00:21:27 we do this
- 00:21:30 then we can see that the interface
- 00:21:32 changed because
- 00:21:33 now we are in the actual data model and
- 00:21:36 again
- 00:21:37 i have to repeat myself you probably
- 00:21:39 haven't seen it before
- 00:21:40 this interface and what you can do right
- 00:21:42 here don't worry
- 00:21:44 we'll talk about that in detail
- 00:21:45 throughout the course for the moment
- 00:21:47 i just want to show you the basics that
- 00:21:49 we need for our initial project
- 00:21:51 so we are now in the so-called report
- 00:21:54 view
- 00:21:54 so we can create our visualizations in
- 00:21:57 this area
- 00:21:59 we will do that soon but first we have
- 00:22:01 to take a look at our actual
- 00:22:03 data model to do this we simply change
- 00:22:06 from the report view
- 00:22:07 right here to the data view right there
- 00:22:12 and now you can see that we have our
- 00:22:14 different columns
- 00:22:15 and our table actually in that data
- 00:22:18 model
- 00:22:19 what we have to change right here is the
- 00:22:21 first column this country column
- 00:22:23 why do i want to change that well in
- 00:22:26 this column
- 00:22:26 we have countries and power bi
- 00:22:30 has great functionalities to visualize
- 00:22:33 country specific data
- 00:22:34 but we have to tell power bi that those
- 00:22:37 are countries
- 00:22:38 and not simple text so to change this
- 00:22:41 we simply go to the modeling ribbon up
- 00:22:43 here like this
- 00:22:45 and now go to data category in this area
- 00:22:49 and if you press that then you can see
- 00:22:51 that at the moment
- 00:22:52 we have uncategorized data which is
- 00:22:55 wrong because we should select
- 00:22:57 country right here because that's the
- 00:22:58 type of data we have
- 00:23:00 and we can find country right here if we
- 00:23:03 click that
- 00:23:05 nothing changed no that's not true we
- 00:23:08 now have that symbol right here
- 00:23:10 so this seems to work let's finally
- 00:23:12 create some visualizations right now
- 00:23:15 to do this we have to go back to the
- 00:23:17 report view so we need to change from
- 00:23:18 this data view
- 00:23:20 back to here the report view and
- 00:23:23 now to create a visualization well you
- 00:23:26 simply can go to this visualization
- 00:23:27 column
- 00:23:28 right here and select a visualization
- 00:23:30 type
- 00:23:31 by simply clicking it so let's maybe
- 00:23:33 create a stacked column chart
- 00:23:35 this one right here and after clicking
- 00:23:38 it
- 00:23:38 you can now see this tile you remember
- 00:23:41 that building block
- 00:23:42 and we can move it around of course but
- 00:23:44 i will simply increase it now
- 00:23:46 or increase the size so that you can see
- 00:23:49 everything
- 00:23:50 so this is our tile now and we don't see
- 00:23:53 a lot because we need data
- 00:23:56 and to add data you simply go to that
- 00:23:58 fields column right here
- 00:24:00 and now drag the gdp for instance
- 00:24:02 because this is the data type that we
- 00:24:04 want to visualize
- 00:24:06 into the corresponding field of the
- 00:24:08 visualization
- 00:24:09 and this simply means that we drag and
- 00:24:12 drop it
- 00:24:12 from here so i'm clicking and holding
- 00:24:14 the left mouse button
- 00:24:16 and now drag it to the value field right
- 00:24:18 here
- 00:24:19 like this because i selected the
- 00:24:21 visualization
- 00:24:23 so this area now refers to that
- 00:24:25 visualization
- 00:24:26 however this chart doesn't look good at
- 00:24:28 the moment so we have to add some more
- 00:24:30 information
- 00:24:31 for instance the different years to add
- 00:24:34 the years we simply select it right here
- 00:24:36 and drag it to the axis area right there
- 00:24:39 like this
- 00:24:41 now it looks better but i want to add
- 00:24:43 more
- 00:24:44 because you remember we also have that
- 00:24:46 country data so why don't we also add
- 00:24:49 this data
- 00:24:49 to our visualization to do this we
- 00:24:52 simply select the country right here
- 00:24:55 and drag it to the legend field right
- 00:24:57 there
- 00:24:58 now our chart looks better but i think
- 00:25:02 we have too much information in that
- 00:25:03 chart
- 00:25:05 so we might set a filter to only see the
- 00:25:08 top 10 countries
- 00:25:09 by the total gdp to do this
- 00:25:12 we simply keep the visualization
- 00:25:13 selected right here
- 00:25:16 now scroll down in this visualizations
- 00:25:18 column
- 00:25:19 and select the country right here now we
- 00:25:22 can scroll down a little bit
- 00:25:24 and change it from the basic filtering
- 00:25:26 to the top end filter
- 00:25:28 like this and now we can simply decide
- 00:25:30 that we only want to see the top
- 00:25:32 right here and if we click into that box
- 00:25:34 right here
- 00:25:35 and define the top 10 well the top 10 by
- 00:25:39 what
- 00:25:40 by.gdp so we simply again take the gdp
- 00:25:43 right here
- 00:25:44 and drag it into that by value field
- 00:25:48 now we press apply filter down here like
- 00:25:50 this
- 00:25:52 and you can see that we now only have
- 00:25:54 the top 10 countries
- 00:25:56 in our visualization but
- 00:25:59 you remember we worked on the data model
- 00:26:02 and explained power bi that we have data
- 00:26:05 for different countries
- 00:26:08 so maybe there is a better way to
- 00:26:09 visualize that
- 00:26:11 and of course there is if you want to
- 00:26:13 change the visualization type
- 00:26:15 you can simply do this by selecting a
- 00:26:17 different visualization
- 00:26:18 in this area and a good visualization
- 00:26:21 right here
- 00:26:22 would be a world map right now the good
- 00:26:24 thing is we have such a map
- 00:26:26 right here and if we now click that and
- 00:26:29 we of course still selected our
- 00:26:31 visualization so we clicked that now
- 00:26:35 now the visualization changed and now we
- 00:26:37 still have the annual data in here
- 00:26:40 if you want to exclude the years as you
- 00:26:42 can see right here
- 00:26:43 and only display the total values so the
- 00:26:45 sum of
- 00:26:46 all the years included in that data
- 00:26:48 model then you simply go to the fields
- 00:26:50 column again
- 00:26:51 and unselect a year right here
- 00:26:54 and if we then click right here into
- 00:26:57 this formatting area
- 00:26:58 right here and add the category labels
- 00:27:02 then we can also see the names of this
- 00:27:04 top 10 countries which makes the
- 00:27:06 visualization
- 00:27:07 even better and this is it
- 00:27:10 we now finished our visualization and
- 00:27:13 with that
- 00:27:13 our initial course project and now that
- 00:27:17 you saw
- 00:27:17 some of the basic functions of power bi
- 00:27:19 desktop and how easy to use it is
- 00:27:22 you probably want to know more and you
- 00:27:25 will of course
- 00:27:26 and maximilian will show you now what
- 00:27:29 exactly you will learn
- 00:27:30 in this course
- 00:27:35 now that manual walk you through the
- 00:27:37 basic building blocks of power bi
- 00:27:39 how is this course structured what does
- 00:27:41 this course have to offer for you and
- 00:27:43 the which part will be done by manual
- 00:27:45 and which parts will be done by me
- 00:27:47 well right now we're still in the
- 00:27:49 welcome first steps part we're getting
- 00:27:51 started but we're
- 00:27:52 almost done thereafter we'll have a look
- 00:27:55 at
- 00:27:56 power bi desktop in detail so how does
- 00:27:59 it work what does this tool offer
- 00:28:01 before we then dive into the query
- 00:28:03 editor in power bi desktop still
- 00:28:05 how can we query data how can we import
- 00:28:08 data and how can we
- 00:28:09 manipulate or structure the data when
- 00:28:11 importing it
- 00:28:13 we'll then have a look at the data view
- 00:28:15 the data
- 00:28:16 view allows us to still work with our
- 00:28:18 data but not in the import step but
- 00:28:20 after we
- 00:28:21 import it so that we structure the data
- 00:28:23 or manipulate it
- 00:28:25 model it to our needs once we have the
- 00:28:28 data
- 00:28:28 in the structure the formatted the way
- 00:28:30 we want to use it
- 00:28:32 we can move on and we can have a look at
- 00:28:34 the report view
- 00:28:35 and we will this report view will then
- 00:28:38 allow you to
- 00:28:39 well output reports with tables with
- 00:28:41 visuals with
- 00:28:42 measures as you will learn so single
- 00:28:45 values for example you can output
- 00:28:47 and that is of course the thing which is
- 00:28:49 most interesting to your executives or
- 00:28:52 things like that where you present your
- 00:28:53 data where you
- 00:28:54 create nice reports with the key results
- 00:28:57 of your data
- 00:28:58 thereafter we'll have a look at the
- 00:29:01 other parts of the power bi universe
- 00:29:03 as manual mentioned it's not just power
- 00:29:06 bi desktop
- 00:29:07 it's power bi service and mobile too so
- 00:29:09 how can you collaborate on your data how
- 00:29:11 can you share it with others
- 00:29:13 and how can you access it from mobile
- 00:29:15 devices
- 00:29:16 now up to this point everything will
- 00:29:18 have been done by manual
- 00:29:19 now i will create my first module or
- 00:29:22 show my first module
- 00:29:24 in the other data sources module i'll
- 00:29:26 have a look at some other data sources
- 00:29:28 than the
- 00:29:28 data sources used so far in the course
- 00:29:31 manual will mainly work with a csv file
- 00:29:33 since it's a very common data source
- 00:29:35 but i will then also show you how to
- 00:29:37 work with json data from restful web
- 00:29:39 services
- 00:29:40 and mysql or general sql databases
- 00:29:44 thereafter another module done by me
- 00:29:47 i'll have a look at how you can create
- 00:29:49 your own custom visuals
- 00:29:51 so that is custom charts basically you
- 00:29:53 could say
- 00:29:54 for power bi here we will learn how that
- 00:29:58 works
- 00:29:58 you will need a bit of programming
- 00:30:00 knowledge for that though
- 00:30:01 so that is certainly required or at
- 00:30:04 least a willingness to learn it
- 00:30:05 but with that you get a powerful tool of
- 00:30:08 really customizing power bi to your
- 00:30:10 needs
- 00:30:10 and creating the exact chart or visual
- 00:30:13 in general
- 00:30:13 you need well then after we had a look
- 00:30:16 at this
- 00:30:17 manual will take over again and do the
- 00:30:19 roundup of the course
- 00:30:20 giving you a brief overview over what
- 00:30:22 you learned and how you progressed
- 00:30:24 through the course
- 00:30:25 so a lot of great content walking you
- 00:30:28 from a to c
- 00:30:29 through power bi and giving you a very
- 00:30:31 complete introduction
- 00:30:33 to it
- 00:30:38 throughout the course you and manuel are
- 00:30:40 going to work for course
- 00:30:41 data set and of course this starts basic
- 00:30:44 and importing it
- 00:30:45 then adjusting the import to your needs
- 00:30:48 and so on and therefore
- 00:30:50 the course project the power bi file
- 00:30:53 will also change now to give you a
- 00:30:55 chance of catching up if you are lost or
- 00:30:58 if you want to compare
- 00:30:59 manual solution with yours you can
- 00:31:02 download
- 00:31:02 the latest version of the project from
- 00:31:04 time to time and you will therefore find
- 00:31:07 zipped files attached to some of the
- 00:31:08 course lectures now i'm going to show
- 00:31:10 you how to use these files because
- 00:31:12 you'll
- 00:31:12 have to adjust your import paths since
- 00:31:14 of course you downloaded them to your
- 00:31:16 machine
- 00:31:17 and the paths will vary or will differ
- 00:31:19 from the ones manual used
- 00:31:20 so here is how to do that you of course
- 00:31:22 extract that file
- 00:31:24 and once you did this you will have the
- 00:31:26 power bi file
- 00:31:27 and the source folder now we can open
- 00:31:30 that power bis
- 00:31:31 file and it will open power bi desktop
- 00:31:34 but as soon as this is finished
- 00:31:36 you will see that we have an issue
- 00:31:39 if we go to the query editor in our case
- 00:31:42 here
- 00:31:43 and let it load you see of course it
- 00:31:45 doesn't find the source file
- 00:31:47 because it still references the path
- 00:31:51 on manual's machine and unfortunately
- 00:31:53 there's no way of avoiding this
- 00:31:55 since power bi needs absolute paths
- 00:31:58 so what you will have to do to fix this
- 00:32:00 is you will have to go to the advanced
- 00:32:02 editor here
- 00:32:04 and here you can edit this path and you
- 00:32:06 should simply
- 00:32:07 adjust it so that it points to your csv
- 00:32:10 file
- 00:32:11 so in my case where i also store this on
- 00:32:14 the desktop
- 00:32:15 i'll go back to my explorer grab
- 00:32:18 this path here which is where the power
- 00:32:20 bi file lives
- 00:32:21 go back to the advanced editor and
- 00:32:24 replace everything
- 00:32:25 in front of source because i still have
- 00:32:27 that folder in there
- 00:32:29 with my path now with that being done we
- 00:32:32 can hit done and you see the data is
- 00:32:35 there
- 00:32:36 if you still experience issues you
- 00:32:38 should hit refresh preview
- 00:32:40 to really force power bi to update your
- 00:32:42 paths
- 00:32:43 and with that unfortunately you'll have
- 00:32:46 to do that
- 00:32:46 for all your imports here
- 00:32:50 i know this can be inconvenient but this
- 00:32:52 is the only way of fixing these paths
- 00:32:55 however once you do have that path the
- 00:32:57 new path copied or stored in your
- 00:32:59 clipboard
- 00:33:00 it's really easy to go in there and
- 00:33:02 change it
- 00:33:03 in all the places where it is used once
- 00:33:05 you did exchange it everywhere where it
- 00:33:07 was used
- 00:33:08 all the other queries which are based
- 00:33:12 on other queries where you did actually
- 00:33:14 import it should update
- 00:33:15 automatically so you don't need to
- 00:33:17 exchange it in all the queries only in
- 00:33:19 the queries where you of course
- 00:33:20 reference these files
- 00:33:21 queries depending on queries where you
- 00:33:23 referenced it will be updated
- 00:33:25 automatically
- 00:33:26 if they aren't hit this refresh preview
- 00:33:28 button i was mentioning earlier
- 00:33:30 and with that you should be good to go
- 00:33:32 and you should be good to
- 00:33:34 use the source files if you want to
- 00:33:36 compare manuals
- 00:33:37 setup with yours and want to see what he
- 00:33:40 actually did there and if something is
- 00:33:41 unclear
- 00:33:43 so that is just a little help enjoy the
- 00:33:45 course
- 00:33:50 so we finished the introduction right
- 00:33:52 now and have a basic overview of the
- 00:33:55 power bi universe
- 00:33:57 now it's time to dive a little deeper
- 00:33:59 and we will start our deep dive with the
- 00:34:01 first tool
- 00:34:02 with power bi desktop let's first take a
- 00:34:05 quick look at
- 00:34:06 the workflow of the tool so generally
- 00:34:09 we can divide power via desktop or the
- 00:34:11 workflow in that tool
- 00:34:13 into three steps the first step is the
- 00:34:15 data preparation
- 00:34:17 so the connection to the source files
- 00:34:19 and the cleaning of the data we imported
- 00:34:22 after we are happy with that basic data
- 00:34:25 we can then
- 00:34:26 import the data into our data model this
- 00:34:28 is the second step the data modeling
- 00:34:31 here we can continue our work on the
- 00:34:33 data and as soon we finished our real
- 00:34:36 data model
- 00:34:36 we can go to the first step the data
- 00:34:39 visualization
- 00:34:40 now for all of those steps power bi
- 00:34:43 desktop has
- 00:34:44 certain tools or views let's see what
- 00:34:46 that is
- 00:34:47 so for the data preparation we have the
- 00:34:49 query editor
- 00:34:51 this is kind of an integrated separate
- 00:34:53 tool which allows us to
- 00:34:55 well prepare the data right and to clean
- 00:34:57 and shape the data we want to
- 00:34:59 have in our later model we will have a
- 00:35:01 look at that query editor in detail in
- 00:35:04 the next module
- 00:35:05 as soon as we finish the preparation we
- 00:35:08 need two things for the data modeling
- 00:35:10 we need the relationship view and the
- 00:35:12 data view
- 00:35:14 both views are connected because you can
- 00:35:17 create relations
- 00:35:18 between the different tables and columns
- 00:35:20 you have in the data view
- 00:35:22 with the relationship view so that's why
- 00:35:24 you have two views in your actual data
- 00:35:26 modeling part
- 00:35:27 now for the last step the data
- 00:35:29 visualization you have the report view
- 00:35:32 this is the view where we can create our
- 00:35:34 visualizations charts
- 00:35:35 tables and so on now we could continue
- 00:35:39 talking about this in theory but i think
- 00:35:41 it's better
- 00:35:42 if we just switch to our initial gdp
- 00:35:44 project from the first module
- 00:35:46 and see where we can find those workflow
- 00:35:49 steps
- 00:35:50 and those tools and views in the actual
- 00:35:52 power bi desktop interface
- 00:35:54 let's find that out so this is the last
- 00:35:58 thing we saw in our gdp project
- 00:36:00 the only difference is the little box in
- 00:36:03 the upper right part of the screen
- 00:36:05 and as you can see we are now in the
- 00:36:07 last step so we are in the data model
- 00:36:09 but in the data visualization step and
- 00:36:12 the report view
- 00:36:14 now how does this interface work
- 00:36:18 and how does this fit to the workflow we
- 00:36:20 see up there
- 00:36:21 let's find that out in the next video
- 00:36:27 so we talked about the workflow of power
- 00:36:30 bi desktop
- 00:36:31 now it's time to understand the
- 00:36:32 interface so
- 00:36:34 here we have the final output of our gdp
- 00:36:38 project
- 00:36:38 and this means we are in the report view
- 00:36:40 with our final visualization
- 00:36:43 so one important note before we start
- 00:36:45 everything we will see in that video
- 00:36:47 is the actual data model so the first
- 00:36:51 step
- 00:36:51 the query editor with the data
- 00:36:53 preparation
- 00:36:54 this is not presented right here this is
- 00:36:57 a separate
- 00:36:58 menu that has to be opened and we will
- 00:37:00 cover the interface of that menu
- 00:37:02 in the next video and the details on how
- 00:37:05 we can work with that query editor
- 00:37:07 in the next module nevertheless keep in
- 00:37:10 mind that there is a big difference
- 00:37:11 between the query editor
- 00:37:13 where you prepare the data and the
- 00:37:15 actual data you import
- 00:37:17 into the data model which can be seen in
- 00:37:20 the interface we are talking
- 00:37:21 right now about after knowing this let's
- 00:37:24 start with the interface
- 00:37:26 so basically you have four
- 00:37:29 core areas you have the ribbons on top
- 00:37:33 you have that left column right here you
- 00:37:35 have that
- 00:37:36 center part where you can see the actual
- 00:37:38 content of each view
- 00:37:40 and you have that columns to the right
- 00:37:42 now
- 00:37:43 i talked about views the fuse can be
- 00:37:46 selected in the left
- 00:37:47 column at the moment we are in the
- 00:37:50 report view
- 00:37:50 and it is displayed right here the
- 00:37:53 report view is the view
- 00:37:54 where we generate our visualizations now
- 00:37:57 if we switch to the data view which is
- 00:37:59 the second button
- 00:38:00 then we see the actual data model so the
- 00:38:03 data we created
- 00:38:04 and we worked on throughout that data
- 00:38:06 modeling step
- 00:38:08 the third button opens the relationship
- 00:38:10 view this is the view that allows us to
- 00:38:13 connect
- 00:38:13 the tables in the data model with each
- 00:38:16 other
- 00:38:17 so that's the first thing you have to
- 00:38:18 know you have free views
- 00:38:20 and you can select those views by
- 00:38:22 clicking on to the different buttons in
- 00:38:23 the left column
- 00:38:25 now let's focus on the right part of the
- 00:38:27 screen that visualizations and that
- 00:38:30 fields column
- 00:38:31 the visualizations column well that
- 00:38:33 column allows us to select
- 00:38:35 different visualizations that we have in
- 00:38:37 power bi desktop
- 00:38:38 for instance if i select our world map
- 00:38:41 like this
- 00:38:42 and then press onto that column chart
- 00:38:45 then the visualization type changes we
- 00:38:48 did not change anything about the
- 00:38:50 content that should be displayed if i
- 00:38:53 want to change the content
- 00:38:54 then i have to change the fields column
- 00:38:57 or the selected
- 00:38:58 columns in the fields column so at the
- 00:39:00 moment we selected country and gdp
- 00:39:03 and we don't have a lot of data to play
- 00:39:05 around with at the moment so i won't
- 00:39:06 change a thing right here
- 00:39:08 now let's change that visualization back
- 00:39:10 to our map that we had by simply
- 00:39:12 clicking it
- 00:39:13 and let's focus on the columns because
- 00:39:16 now i will switch to the data view
- 00:39:18 and in the data view we see that that
- 00:39:20 visualizations column is gone
- 00:39:22 this has a simple reason you cannot
- 00:39:24 visualize anything right here
- 00:39:26 so you don't need that column however
- 00:39:29 the fields column is still here
- 00:39:31 and this makes sense because you need
- 00:39:33 that column for instance to create
- 00:39:35 measures you may not know what measures
- 00:39:38 are at the moment
- 00:39:39 but you will learn that so don't worry
- 00:39:41 but you can create
- 00:39:43 those measures for instance in both
- 00:39:45 views in the report view
- 00:39:47 and in the data view and this might be a
- 00:39:49 nice help if you
- 00:39:50 are looking at some visualization and
- 00:39:52 you see that you are missing some
- 00:39:54 important information that you need a
- 00:39:55 calculation for
- 00:39:57 however in this course we will focus on
- 00:40:00 the actual data modeling
- 00:40:01 and the creation of such measures in the
- 00:40:04 data view
- 00:40:05 and in the report view we will really
- 00:40:07 only create the visualizations and the
- 00:40:09 outputs
- 00:40:10 but you are free to work with power bi
- 00:40:12 desktop as you prefer
- 00:40:13 so i just wanted to tell you that now if
- 00:40:16 we select
- 00:40:17 the last view the relationship view we
- 00:40:20 see that the fields column disappears
- 00:40:22 and this makes sense because in this
- 00:40:24 view every content will be displayed
- 00:40:27 as a box and by every content i mean
- 00:40:30 every table
- 00:40:31 of the data model with the corresponding
- 00:40:33 columns
- 00:40:34 because this allows you to connect that
- 00:40:36 tables and that columns with each other
- 00:40:39 however you might note that we have
- 00:40:41 table 1 and then the column names
- 00:40:43 which are equal to the table and the
- 00:40:45 column names in the fields view
- 00:40:47 so basically it's just displayed
- 00:40:49 differently with some different
- 00:40:50 functionalities
- 00:40:51 but the content is basically the same
- 00:40:54 now we understand the left column
- 00:40:56 the center part and the right columns so
- 00:40:59 the last thing we need to understand
- 00:41:00 is that ribbons part up here at the
- 00:41:03 moment
- 00:41:04 we see five ribbons this is because i
- 00:41:07 selected
- 00:41:08 our visualization so our world map let
- 00:41:11 me just unselect that by clicking
- 00:41:13 into the report and now we see that we
- 00:41:15 have
- 00:41:16 three general ribbons so the home the
- 00:41:18 view and the modeling ribbon
- 00:41:20 we'll talk about the fire ribbon later
- 00:41:22 so the home ribbon
- 00:41:24 doesn't change the only thing that
- 00:41:26 changes is
- 00:41:27 the functionalities that are available
- 00:41:29 depending on the view you selected
- 00:41:31 for instance the new page functionality
- 00:41:35 will only work in the report view in the
- 00:41:38 data view
- 00:41:38 we cannot create visualizations so the
- 00:41:41 available functionalities
- 00:41:42 change nevertheless the home ribbon
- 00:41:45 is available in all of the views as you
- 00:41:48 can see
- 00:41:49 this is different for the remaining two
- 00:41:51 ribbons the view and the modeling ribbon
- 00:41:54 the view ribbon is only available in the
- 00:41:56 report view
- 00:41:58 because here you can play around you can
- 00:42:00 define how you want to display your
- 00:42:01 report
- 00:42:02 and you could also try out what your
- 00:42:04 report looks like in a phone layout
- 00:42:06 you don't need that functionality in the
- 00:42:09 data and the relationship view though
- 00:42:11 so if we change the data view we see
- 00:42:13 that we don't have the view ribbon
- 00:42:15 the same thing is true in the
- 00:42:16 relationship view so that's
- 00:42:18 another outcome we know that the columns
- 00:42:21 change
- 00:42:22 and that the ribbons change depending on
- 00:42:24 the selected view
- 00:42:25 in the left column now let's see what
- 00:42:28 happens to the last ribbon the modeling
- 00:42:29 ribbon
- 00:42:30 so here we can model our data we know
- 00:42:33 that
- 00:42:34 and we can do the same thing in the data
- 00:42:36 view that's what we talked about that
- 00:42:38 you are free on where you want to model
- 00:42:40 your data
- 00:42:41 but we will focus on the data view for
- 00:42:43 that modeling purposes
- 00:42:45 if we go to the relationship view we see
- 00:42:48 that the modeling options are
- 00:42:50 well reduced right and this again makes
- 00:42:52 sense
- 00:42:53 because you don't model your data in
- 00:42:55 that view
- 00:42:56 you only create those relationships and
- 00:42:59 you can do that if you go to the home
- 00:43:01 ribbon
- 00:43:01 and then select manage relationships at
- 00:43:04 the moment
- 00:43:05 there is not a lot to manage because we
- 00:43:07 only have one table in our data model
- 00:43:09 but this is how it would work and we
- 00:43:10 will see how this works of course
- 00:43:13 so this is it let me now go back to the
- 00:43:15 report view
- 00:43:16 and by that we now have a basic
- 00:43:18 understanding of the
- 00:43:20 interface of the data model
- 00:43:23 however we still have that query editor
- 00:43:26 right
- 00:43:26 so the data preparation part let's take
- 00:43:29 a look at the interface of that query
- 00:43:31 editor
- 00:43:32 in the next video
- 00:43:38 we now know the interface of the data
- 00:43:40 model
- 00:43:41 let's see what we can do in the query
- 00:43:43 editor then
- 00:43:45 so this is where we stopped in the last
- 00:43:47 video we are in the report view
- 00:43:49 of our gdp data model let's now open the
- 00:43:53 query editor
- 00:43:54 and see what the interface looks like
- 00:43:56 there to open the query editor you
- 00:43:58 simply go to the home ribbon
- 00:44:00 and select edit queries now we can
- 00:44:03 maximize that
- 00:44:04 and the first thing you might note is
- 00:44:06 that this looks
- 00:44:08 kind of similar to the view we had
- 00:44:09 before in the data model
- 00:44:11 however there are a lot of differences
- 00:44:14 the main difference is that ribbon area
- 00:44:17 appear
- 00:44:18 we have more ribbons and a lot more
- 00:44:20 functionalities
- 00:44:22 now we will not talk about those
- 00:44:24 functionalities right now
- 00:44:26 because in the next module where we will
- 00:44:28 start our first real project
- 00:44:30 we will look at a lot of those functions
- 00:44:32 in detail
- 00:44:34 so for now the only thing you have to
- 00:44:35 know the ribbons
- 00:44:37 provide a lot of functionalities to work
- 00:44:40 with our queries
- 00:44:41 but we'll see how this works so let's go
- 00:44:44 to the left column then
- 00:44:45 we had that view selection in the data
- 00:44:48 model
- 00:44:49 here we don't have you the only thing
- 00:44:51 you can change right here
- 00:44:52 is the selected query now in our case we
- 00:44:56 only connected
- 00:44:57 one data to that power bi desktop
- 00:45:00 project
- 00:45:00 but if you connect more data then you
- 00:45:03 could select all of your data
- 00:45:04 connections
- 00:45:05 so by that all of your queries in that
- 00:45:07 view
- 00:45:09 if you then go to the right column you
- 00:45:11 see that you have that query settings
- 00:45:13 here you can do two things mainly the
- 00:45:16 first thing is you can change the name
- 00:45:18 so you could write table one two press
- 00:45:20 enter
- 00:45:21 and you see that the name changed so
- 00:45:23 let's undo that
- 00:45:24 this is one functionality the more
- 00:45:27 important functionality
- 00:45:28 is this applied steps table right here
- 00:45:31 this table
- 00:45:32 shows you each step you applied to your
- 00:45:34 query and you remember
- 00:45:36 we changed some things and we can see
- 00:45:38 every change right here
- 00:45:40 now you cannot only see what you changed
- 00:45:43 you can also
- 00:45:44 undo your changes by clicking that x
- 00:45:46 right here
- 00:45:47 we'll see how this works and how great
- 00:45:50 and helpful it actually is
- 00:45:52 in the next module so just keep in mind
- 00:45:54 whatever we do
- 00:45:55 is tracked right here and by saying
- 00:45:58 tracked right here
- 00:46:00 i also have to add something if you look
- 00:46:02 into that formula bar
- 00:46:04 and this is also something new you might
- 00:46:06 note that we didn't have that
- 00:46:08 in the data view or in the data model
- 00:46:10 actually
- 00:46:11 the reason for that is that the query
- 00:46:14 editor
- 00:46:14 and the actual data model work with two
- 00:46:17 different
- 00:46:18 formula languages this is the so-called
- 00:46:21 m language whereas the data model
- 00:46:24 works with the dax now we'll talk about
- 00:46:27 the dex language in more detail later on
- 00:46:30 what you have to know for the moment
- 00:46:31 regarding that m language in the query
- 00:46:33 editor is
- 00:46:34 that each of the steps you apply is also
- 00:46:38 presented in a formula view so you can
- 00:46:41 see what happens
- 00:46:42 from the code perspective actually now
- 00:46:45 you could
- 00:46:46 learn that m language of course no
- 00:46:48 problem but
- 00:46:49 the query editor is built in a way that
- 00:46:52 you have a lot of
- 00:46:53 implemented functions so normally you
- 00:46:56 don't need to
- 00:46:57 learn that m language to do the general
- 00:47:00 tasks that are necessary
- 00:47:02 to shape your data nevertheless you can
- 00:47:05 see what happens with the code
- 00:47:06 step by step by looking into that
- 00:47:08 formula bar
- 00:47:10 so i'll come back to that from time to
- 00:47:11 time throughout our data shaping and
- 00:47:14 cleaning in the next module
- 00:47:16 so that's it we now saw the interface of
- 00:47:19 the data model in the last video
- 00:47:22 and we saw the interface of the query
- 00:47:23 editor in that video
- 00:47:26 now before we start with our first
- 00:47:27 project and dive
- 00:47:29 really deep into that query editor let's
- 00:47:32 take a look at the options
- 00:47:33 and see if we have to adjust something
- 00:47:35 to make sure that power bi desktop
- 00:47:37 works the way we want it to work we'll
- 00:47:39 do that in the next video
- 00:47:45 before we start our first course project
- 00:47:48 let's take a look at the options
- 00:47:50 so this is still the query editor and we
- 00:47:53 have to close that to access the options
- 00:47:55 menu
- 00:47:56 so we go to the home ribbon and press
- 00:47:58 close and apply
- 00:48:00 now we are back in the data model and
- 00:48:03 before we change the options one
- 00:48:05 important note again
- 00:48:07 in the options we have two option types
- 00:48:10 available
- 00:48:11 global options and current file options
- 00:48:14 the global options are set for all power
- 00:48:17 bi projects
- 00:48:18 the current file options as the name
- 00:48:21 says actually
- 00:48:22 are only true for the current file where
- 00:48:25 you
- 00:48:25 set those options so this means we have
- 00:48:28 to open a
- 00:48:29 new power bi project which we will then
- 00:48:31 use for our course project
- 00:48:33 to make sure that the options are set
- 00:48:35 correctly
- 00:48:36 now let's do this so we go to the file
- 00:48:38 ribbon
- 00:48:40 press new now it takes a few seconds to
- 00:48:43 load the new power bi desktop
- 00:48:45 instance here it is we can close that
- 00:48:49 for a moment because we don't
- 00:48:51 import any data right now and we can now
- 00:48:54 go to file again
- 00:48:56 go to options and settings here we see
- 00:48:59 that we have data source settings
- 00:49:01 which we will not take a look at right
- 00:49:02 now and we have options which we will
- 00:49:04 select
- 00:49:06 and in the options you see that global
- 00:49:08 and current file options
- 00:49:10 we don't have to change that global
- 00:49:12 options so we can directly go to current
- 00:49:14 file
- 00:49:15 and the data load section here i want to
- 00:49:18 adjust
- 00:49:19 three things the first thing i want to
- 00:49:21 adjust is
- 00:49:22 i want to unselect the automatic data
- 00:49:25 detection
- 00:49:26 this is not happening because i think
- 00:49:29 this is a bad option this is a great
- 00:49:31 option actually
- 00:49:32 but i don't want the data to be detected
- 00:49:34 automatically
- 00:49:35 i want to do that on our own so that you
- 00:49:38 see how this works and that you really
- 00:49:39 get an understanding
- 00:49:41 on how power bi desktop understands the
- 00:49:43 data
- 00:49:44 this is why we unselect this one the
- 00:49:47 same logic is true for the relationships
- 00:49:50 power bi automatically detects the
- 00:49:52 relationships that might exist between
- 00:49:54 the tables in your data model
- 00:49:56 nevertheless although this works good we
- 00:49:59 will unselect that
- 00:50:00 to define that relationships on our own
- 00:50:02 and to understand the relationships
- 00:50:04 better
- 00:50:05 so let's unselect that and the last
- 00:50:07 thing
- 00:50:08 is the background data loading option
- 00:50:11 this has simple performance reasons so
- 00:50:14 the query editor is faster
- 00:50:16 if you unselect that so let's do that
- 00:50:19 now we are fine we can now press ok to
- 00:50:22 save the options
- 00:50:23 and now we also have to save that
- 00:50:25 project which will be our course project
- 00:50:28 because as we said we have that option
- 00:50:30 set for the current file only
- 00:50:32 so if we start our project in a new file
- 00:50:35 then the options won't be set the way we
- 00:50:36 did it right now
- 00:50:37 so let's save that by clicking on to
- 00:50:39 file and save as
- 00:50:42 and i will call that 0 1 population
- 00:50:46 because that's what the data are going
- 00:50:48 to be about
- 00:50:49 and you can now select a folder where
- 00:50:51 you want to save the project and in the
- 00:50:54 next video
- 00:50:55 we will start working on the project
- 00:51:00 and with that we reached the end of this
- 00:51:02 course excerpt i hope you saw that power
- 00:51:04 bi is a powerful and really awesome tool
- 00:51:07 and if you're interested into more right
- 00:51:08 now then feel free to have a look at the
- 00:51:10 different videos here on the channel
- 00:51:12 or as i said in the beginning i would
- 00:51:14 also be really happy to welcome you
- 00:51:16 onboard of the power bi a complete
- 00:51:18 introduction course on udemy
- 00:51:20 i have to say it again you can find the
- 00:51:21 link down there in the video description
- 00:51:24 so i hope to have you on board either
- 00:51:25 here or on udemy or on both platforms
- 00:51:28 and as always the only thing i can say
- 00:51:30 right now thanks a lot for watching
- 00:51:32 and hope to see you in the next videos
- 00:51:35 bye
