Why we still need Web Developers (despite services like Wix, Squarespace etc).

  • 00:00:00 hi today I got an interesting question
  • 00:00:02 from a student he asked me whether it
  • 00:00:05 would still be a good idea to learn web
  • 00:00:08 development and become a web developer
  • 00:00:10 when we have services like wicks or
  • 00:00:13 Squarespace or similar services which
  • 00:00:16 make it very easy to build a web page
  • 00:00:18 because the air you don't really need to
  • 00:00:20 write any code there you can just drag
  • 00:00:23 and drop your web page you can't just
  • 00:00:25 build your website by dragging and
  • 00:00:27 dropping and using templates and well
  • 00:00:30 everyone can build a website with that
  • 00:00:33 so therefore the question is is it still
  • 00:00:35 worth learning web development or should
  • 00:00:39 we better learn how to use Wix and other
  • 00:00:41 pages like it
  • 00:00:48 now first of all I want to say that
  • 00:00:51 services and websites like wigs or
  • 00:00:53 Squarespace and it will use these names
  • 00:00:57 interchangeably so services like them
  • 00:00:59 which allow us to build websites in this
  • 00:01:02 drag-and-drop approach where you don't
  • 00:01:04 need to be a web developer and where you
  • 00:01:06 don't need to write code to build a
  • 00:01:08 website those services really are
  • 00:01:10 awesome
  • 00:01:11 because with them you see how easy it is
  • 00:01:14 this is how Wix advertises itself and
  • 00:01:17 you can see that you can really build a
  • 00:01:19 website just like this in such a rich
  • 00:01:21 editor and you don't need to write any
  • 00:01:23 code and those services are amazing
  • 00:01:25 because they enable everyone to build a
  • 00:01:28 website everyone can build a website
  • 00:01:30 with them and you don't need to be a web
  • 00:01:33 developer to build one and you don't
  • 00:01:35 need to hire and pay a web developer to
  • 00:01:37 build one now of course we're all there
  • 00:01:40 because we want to become web developers
  • 00:01:43 or because we are web developers and
  • 00:01:46 therefore it's not great if there is a
  • 00:01:48 service that replaces us but does Wix
  • 00:01:51 and does Squarespace and all those other
  • 00:01:54 services do they really replace us well
  • 00:01:58 let's have a look at the features Wix
  • 00:02:00 offers in the end Wix gives us such an
  • 00:02:03 interactive editor which allows us to
  • 00:02:06 build our website from scratch and in
  • 00:02:09 this what-you-see-is-what-you-get
  • 00:02:11 approach now what you also see is that
  • 00:02:15 you got a lot of customization options
  • 00:02:18 and you can integrate a lot of things
  • 00:02:20 like analytics as you see here you can
  • 00:02:24 add user login and you can even build
  • 00:02:27 ecommerce sites and shops with Wix so
  • 00:02:30 that's great
  • 00:02:31 you can also handle all the payments and
  • 00:02:33 the purchases there you'll of course
  • 00:02:35 have to do the shipping on your own
  • 00:02:37 though so that's amazing that's what you
  • 00:02:39 can do with Wix but of course they don't
  • 00:02:42 tell you what you can't do with it and
  • 00:02:45 that's the part where it becomes
  • 00:02:47 interesting for us web developers let's
  • 00:02:50 check out the templates on the Wix page
  • 00:02:51 these are the templates with which we
  • 00:02:54 can start building our website and of
  • 00:02:57 course you can then fully customize them
  • 00:02:59 but looking at those templates gives
  • 00:03:02 an idea of which kinds of websites we
  • 00:03:04 can build with Wix and if we take a look
  • 00:03:06 at all those templates it looks like we
  • 00:03:08 can build a lot of different websites
  • 00:03:10 and web applications with Wix then it's
  • 00:03:13 of course true a lot of businesses will
  • 00:03:16 be able to benefit from Wix and similar
  • 00:03:18 sites to build websites for them if you
  • 00:03:21 have a car shop or if you have a bakery
  • 00:03:24 or if you're running a hotel you can of
  • 00:03:27 course build your site with Wix if
  • 00:03:30 you're a consultant or you're doing some
  • 00:03:33 kind of personal coaching you can build
  • 00:03:36 your site with Wix if you want an
  • 00:03:38 e-commerce store if you're selling
  • 00:03:40 fashion or if you're selling toys or
  • 00:03:43 anything like that you can build that
  • 00:03:45 shop with Wix you see there are a lot of
  • 00:03:47 templates but if you take a closer look
  • 00:03:50 and you dive into some of those
  • 00:03:52 templates you will actually see that
  • 00:03:54 they all in the end come down to landing
  • 00:03:58 page portfolio like websites which isn't
  • 00:04:02 bad because that is exactly what a lot
  • 00:04:05 of businesses need but what you won't
  • 00:04:07 really find here are complex rich web
  • 00:04:11 applications sure a shop certainly
  • 00:04:15 sounds more complex but in the end an
  • 00:04:17 ecommerce site is relatively
  • 00:04:19 straightforward and therefore building
  • 00:04:21 such a shop and so on definitely might
  • 00:04:24 enable you to run your entire business
  • 00:04:26 but the website itself is no rocket
  • 00:04:29 science shops are great in tutorials to
  • 00:04:33 practice certain aspects but you can and
  • 00:04:35 probably should absolutely use a tool
  • 00:04:38 like wigs or e-commerce a content
  • 00:04:42 management system like Shopify to build
  • 00:04:44 your shop because they solve many
  • 00:04:46 problems which you otherwise would have
  • 00:04:48 to solve on your own
  • 00:04:49 and shops are pretty straightforward you
  • 00:04:51 have products you have product pages you
  • 00:04:53 have a cart you have a payment process
  • 00:04:55 it's all relatively straightforward so
  • 00:04:58 we have those shops and we have all
  • 00:05:00 those portfolio landing page sites now
  • 00:05:04 what you won't find on Wix and what will
  • 00:05:06 be very hard to build with Wix and
  • 00:05:08 similar sites probably impossible is
  • 00:05:11 Academy nope that was just joke but I
  • 00:05:14 mean is something
  • 00:05:15 like YouTube something like YouTube if
  • 00:05:17 you want to build your own video sharing
  • 00:05:20 social network which is what YouTube is
  • 00:05:22 yet that will be difficult or very
  • 00:05:25 likely impossible with Wix you might be
  • 00:05:29 able to build this general layout but
  • 00:05:31 video hosting video processing video
  • 00:05:35 recommendation and all the back and for
  • 00:05:37 content creators where we can upload and
  • 00:05:40 manage our videos that's something which
  • 00:05:43 really has to be tailored for this
  • 00:05:45 specific use case there's a lot of logic
  • 00:05:48 in there and a lot of moving parts and
  • 00:05:51 you won't find a template on Vic's and
  • 00:05:53 you won't be able to customize any
  • 00:05:54 existing template such that you would
  • 00:05:56 have all those features because that's
  • 00:05:58 simply not what these website builder
  • 00:06:01 services are made for they are really
  • 00:06:04 made for your own portfolio site for
  • 00:06:07 presenting your business for attracting
  • 00:06:09 customers maybe for selling something
  • 00:06:11 but if you're building a digital
  • 00:06:13 business where a lot of interaction then
  • 00:06:16 happens on your site after the purchase
  • 00:06:19 or where your main service is your
  • 00:06:22 website that will be very difficult and
  • 00:06:24 most likely impossible to build with Wix
  • 00:06:27 and similar sites and YouTube is just
  • 00:06:30 one example take something like udemy
  • 00:06:33 which is a site where you can take
  • 00:06:34 online courses of course such a site
  • 00:06:38 could be built with a website builder
  • 00:06:40 like Wix we present a couple of products
  • 00:06:42 and the products are simply courses here
  • 00:06:45 and we can buy them but it gets
  • 00:06:47 interesting as soon as we bought a
  • 00:06:49 course the course taking experience is
  • 00:06:52 kind of the main product off udemy sure
  • 00:06:55 you bought a course but you also get
  • 00:06:57 this course player you got the
  • 00:06:58 interactive curriculum you get
  • 00:07:00 downloadable resources you can ask
  • 00:07:02 questions and of course not just on
  • 00:07:05 udemy but also on a bunch of our
  • 00:07:06 platforms too also on our own site
  • 00:07:09 academy.com
  • 00:07:09 and if you're an instructor you also got
  • 00:07:13 a whole different side of you me you got
  • 00:07:15 the back end where you can upload and
  • 00:07:17 manage your courses so here the website
  • 00:07:20 itself is the main service in the end
  • 00:07:22 and that's just not something you can
  • 00:07:24 build with services like Wix because
  • 00:07:25 that's not a straightforward website
  • 00:07:28 it's a whole
  • 00:07:29 application in the web with a lot of
  • 00:07:32 moving parts and different features a
  • 00:07:34 lot of customization a lot of complex
  • 00:07:37 logic complex front-end and actually
  • 00:07:40 multiple parts in that front and and of
  • 00:07:42 course all the complex back-end for all
  • 00:07:45 the video uploads processing storing
  • 00:07:47 fraud detection and all these fun things
  • 00:07:50 and of course these are just some
  • 00:07:52 examples you can find tons of other
  • 00:07:55 examples like Facebook a complete social
  • 00:07:58 network that's also something you won't
  • 00:08:00 really be able to build with website
  • 00:08:02 builder sites like Wix calm because this
  • 00:08:05 is not just a website which is visited
  • 00:08:07 by people where you can read some
  • 00:08:09 information about your business and
  • 00:08:11 where you then can maybe buy something
  • 00:08:13 here we got a lot of complex parts that
  • 00:08:16 need to work together and here again
  • 00:08:17 Facebook itself is the web service so
  • 00:08:21 whenever you're building a more complex
  • 00:08:23 web application whenever your main
  • 00:08:25 product is your website and the services
  • 00:08:28 you're offering there then you will very
  • 00:08:30 likely not be able to build this with
  • 00:08:32 Wix whenever you just need a landing
  • 00:08:35 page a page to present your product
  • 00:08:37 potentially an offline product which
  • 00:08:40 just needs to be presented in the
  • 00:08:42 Internet but is used in the offline
  • 00:08:44 world in the real world in such cases or
  • 00:08:47 if you need a basic store then of course
  • 00:08:49 services like Wix are awesome and can
  • 00:08:52 save you a lot of time and money but
  • 00:08:54 even if you're building something like
  • 00:08:56 that even then there might be reasons
  • 00:08:58 why you might want to use a web
  • 00:09:00 developer or why you might want to learn
  • 00:09:02 web development to build it on your own
  • 00:09:04 simply because you can customize it in
  • 00:09:07 every tiny detail in exactly the way you
  • 00:09:10 want you can optimize it in all the ways
  • 00:09:13 that matter to you you've got full
  • 00:09:15 flexibility and you got no template and
  • 00:09:19 no editor into which you have to fit
  • 00:09:21 your website instead if you're
  • 00:09:23 developing a page on your own you can
  • 00:09:25 control every tiny piece about it and
  • 00:09:28 those are all the strong reasons for
  • 00:09:30 doing it on your own or for hiring a web
  • 00:09:33 developer so long story short there are
  • 00:09:36 a lot of great reasons for using Wix
  • 00:09:38 Squarespace WordPress or all those hours
  • 00:09:42 services but there are equally many
  • 00:09:45 reasons for not doing that and it really
  • 00:09:47 comes down to the exact use case we're
  • 00:09:49 talking about I showed you some examples
  • 00:09:51 where wigs and the other sites really
  • 00:09:54 are just not a realistic option where
  • 00:09:57 you wouldn't be able to build what you
  • 00:09:58 want to build with them and then of
  • 00:10:00 course there are those sites which I
  • 00:10:02 also mentioned where you absolutely can
  • 00:10:04 use wigs and similar services and I hope
  • 00:10:07 this clarifies why we will still need
  • 00:10:10 web developers and why our job is more
  • 00:10:12 important than ever before because more
  • 00:10:14 and more businesses and services are
  • 00:10:16 moving to the web but of course that
  • 00:10:19 does not mean that every web page has to
  • 00:10:22 be built by us and last but not least
  • 00:10:24 here's a simple question I want you to
  • 00:10:26 think about do you think Wix itself this
  • 00:10:29 entire service offering the editor which
  • 00:10:31 they offer and all that do you think
  • 00:10:34 that could be built with Wix the answer
  • 00:10:37 is no because that is a very complex
  • 00:10:39 digital product and with that we're back
  • 00:10:41 to those examples I mentioned before
  • 00:10:43 YouTube etc
